Cómo ayudar a niños que aprenden otro idioma/How to Help Children Learning Another Language

Educar niños bilingues sigue siendo un reto, aún más en pandemia. Viéndose limitados en el contacto físico y la inmersión diaria en las escuelas y su comunidad. Los padres nos hemos convertido en directores, maestros, intendentes, asistentes, entre otros. Algúnas familias tienen acceso a pods educativos, otros no, solo tienen la escuela pública y los recursos que el maestr@ puede ofrecer.

Desafortunadamente, hay muy poca investigación sobre cómo ayudar a los estudiantes de otro idioma de manera virtual, o híbrida. El desarrollo oral del lenguaje es importante principalmente en la primera infancia. El beneficio durante los primeros años de escuchar y hablar un nuevo idioma regulamente es inmensurable.

Las escuelas, educadores, cuidadores y padres de familia deben pensar creativamente para ayudar con el propósito de aprender un nuevo idioma.

Cualquier esfuerzo de aprendizaje de un idioma no puede ir separado de otros contenidos académicos, realizar actividades interesantes para los niños en otro idioma enriquece la adquisicón de vocabulario.

En mi experiencia durante los años trabajados con nuestras familias bilingues, toda actividad que fomente el desarrollo de la creatividad en los niños mientras ésta sea realizada en otro idioma, produce una experiencia en el aprendizaje del idioma aún mas eficaz y entretenida para el niño.

Educating bilingual children continues to be a challenge, even more so in a pandemic. They are limited both in physical contact and daily immersion in schools and their community. Parents have become principals, teachers, janitors, assistants, among many others. Some families have access to educational pods, others do not. They only have public schools and the resources teachers can offer.

Unfortunately, there is very little research on how to help students learning another language in a virtual, or hybrid way. Oral language development is important primarily in the initial stages of early childhood. The benefits during the first few years of hearing and speaking a new language regularly are immeasurable.

Schools, educators, caregivers, and parents must think creatively to help with the purpose of learning a new language.

Any effort to learn a language cannot be separated from other academic content. Doing interesting activities for children in another language enriches the acquisition of vocabulary.

In my experience, gained from years of working with our bilingual families, any activity that encourages the development of creativity in children while carried out in another language, produces a more effective and entertaining experience for the child learning a new language.
